We're now going to reveal the secrets of skincare guru Bernd Kuhs – the creative mind behind all the amazing products from 48grams.
It all starts with coconut water…
We assume it's common knowledge that our masks aren't just pieces of fabric or fleece. But perhaps far fewer people know that they're the product of cutting-edge biotechnology. The base is fresh coconut water – just as you know it: slightly whitish and delicious. We inoculate it with bacteria (the principle is the same as with kombucha) – and then let it ferment for quite some time. These microorganisms use the natural sugar in the coconut water as a nutrient and then produce a so-called "three-dimensional network" – biocellulose. The tissue then layers up in special fermenters – large, sterile containers. Besides temperature and pH, oxygen supply is also crucial. After 7 to 14 days, an ultra-elastic and highly absorbent membrane lies on the liquid's surface. Its shape differs from the 48grams version, however, as these are actual gel sheets. After being cut to size, they are processed into the masks.
The active ingredient comes into play
Now it gets interesting: The biocellulose is nice, and it feels great on the skin. But it's still "empty." No active ingredients, no spa effect. That's where the next step comes in: Bernd Kuhs' team places the raw materials into large vats – filled with our special biomembrane fluid and, of course, Aloe Vera, Oligo-hyaluronic acid and other ingredients – depending on the type of mask. In the Stress Relief Mask For example, it also contains mastic, algae extracts and soothing plant substances. Vitamin C and niacinamide are added to the décolleté mask.. That's a huge impact!
How the brand name originated
For those wondering how long the blanks soak in the liquid: the answer is at least three days. That's how long it takes for the cell structure to become completely saturated with Kuhs's active ingredient solution (up to 35 ml of liquid). Now for a little company secret: the average mask then weighs 48 grams. Now you know where our brand name comes from, right?
Handmade – with love and care
And now what? What follows isn't mass-produced, but genuine handcraft. The team of employees (yes, exclusively women with wonderful dexterity) takes each mask individually from the vats. First, the consistency is checked! Then the mask is folded and packed in a sachet. The final step: sealing and refrigeration. Done.
