Today things are getting hairy. It's been a while since we last discussed men's facial care here on the 48grams blog. Admittedly, there are two factions within the editorial team. On the one hand, there are the purists who see this topic as solely for us women. But today, the other camp has prevailed. Our female colleagues place particular emphasis on facial care for men with beards. This isn't just about washing and trimming. They're convinced that the skin under and around facial hair also needs attention!
Now let's look at the numbers.
In Germany, a significant number of men proudly sport facial hair of varying lengths around their mouths and necks. This ranges from three-day stubble to the "I don't need to shave for three weeks" look, all the way to a full, impressive beard. Statistics show that more than 45 percent of men prefer to go clean-shaven – across all age groups. More precisely, around 45 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds wear a beard, while this figure rises to approximately 55 percent among 30- to 59-year-olds. These figures demonstrate the appreciation for facial hair. Clearly, this is more than just a hipster trend.
Care, care, care!
While most men are primarily concerned with hair care, they often overlook the fact that attractiveness is only truly enhanced when the skin also looks its best. In other words: well-groomed and protected. This refers to the tissue beneath the beard as well as the skin surrounding it. The problems are almost identical to those faced by women. The only difference is that men's skin is generally thicker, and the signs of aging often appear later. Nevertheless, issues like dryness, itching, wrinkles, and fine lines are commonplace for them as well. Therefore, here are seven important tips for keeping facial skin healthy and well-groomed:
1. Daily cleaning
Men, listen up! Even if your beard covers your skin, that doesn't mean it can be neglected. gentle facial cleansing Cleansing twice a day is crucial for removing dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells. However, strongly scented (or alcohol-based) products should be avoided, as these can irritate the skin.
2. Don't forget moisture
Beard oil is an essential product for beard care – of course. But the moisture needed for the skin underneath is too often forgotten. A light face cream A moisturizing lotion should be used daily to keep your beard supple and hydrated. Simply massage it in gently. This will also prevent your beard from sticking.
3. Exfoliation for smooth skin
Yes indeed! Exfoliating once a week removes dead skin cells. And it helps—as we women know from painful experience—to prevent ingrown hairs. That tip was free (the author laughs while writing). So, again, it's all about using a gentle product—to avoid irritating the skin. Simply massage it in and then rinse thoroughly. The water shouldn't be too hot or too cold. Lukewarm is ideal.
4. Trimming and Shaping
Even though this isn't exactly a woman's area of expertise: men, invest in a decent beard trimmer or clipper. It doesn't just lead to neatly trimmed beard growth; it actually makes caring for the skin underneath much easier. The idea should be understandable: With untamed, wild growth, the nourishing substances can hardly be massaged through to the skin…
5. Pay attention to your diet
A healthy diet not only affects your overall health but also your skin. A balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats has truly never hurt anyone.
6. Protection from the sun:
Even though a beard offers some protection, it is still important to protect the skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. A moisturizing cream with a high sun protection factor (At least 30, ideally 50) forms an important barrier. It's not enough to just mention protection against skin cancer – it's enough that the skin quickly becomes wrinkled and also dries out significantly. No man really wants dandruff in or around his beard.
7. Regular visits to the dermatologist
And now, seriously, boys: Despite all your efforts at self-care, it's also advisable for you to have regular skin checks done by a dermatologist. A specialist can identify potential problems early and help ensure the best possible care for your skin.
