It's so annoying. And sometimes even painful. And it seems like there's no cure for it… literally. Acne affects us all. Yes, even here at 48grams, in the "hallowed halls" of skincare, we struggle with it when our facial skin displays unsightly and sometimes inflamed bumps. But the reality is: about 85% of teenagers and young adults suffer from acne – and surprisingly, more than 42% of adults as well. The most common cause, the worst trigger, is hormonal changes. Everyone knows that by now. Menstruation or stress often make things even worse. For others, it's simply excessive sebum production that promotes the formation of pimples. But enough about the causes of acne – let's get to the best tips and tricks for fighting it:
1. Honey: The natural bacteria killer
Who would have thought it: Honey isn't just a delicious spread for bread; this golden treat is also a potent remedy for pimples. Its antibacterial and significantly anti-inflammatory properties make it a true healing agent. To use, simply dab a small drop of raw honey (pure, natural honey) directly onto the pimple and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Then rinse with lukewarm water. The high sugar content of the honey draws out moisture, while enzymes kill the bacteria. In addition, the antioxidants support the healing process.
2. Tea tree oil: The essential oil miracle cure
Tea tree oil is extremely popular for its antiseptic properties; it is effective against bacteria. However, the oil must be diluted in a 1:9 ratio before use. Ideally, use a carrier oil (such as jojoba oil). Gently dab the mixture onto the affected area with a cotton swab. Ideally, apply twice a day. The bacteria will die, and the redness and swelling will subside. BUT: Never use undiluted tea tree oil – it will irritate the skin.
3. Ice cubes: Cold therapy
Simple but effective: cold therapy for acne. This reduces swelling and relieves pain. Simply wrap a few ice cubes in a clean (!) cloth and press them onto the affected areas for 30 to 60 seconds. After a short break, repeat the process. The cold constricts the blood vessels, which reduces redness. It's important not to apply ice directly to the skin. This will almost certainly damage the skin.
4. Aloe Vera: The natural moisturizer
Aloe vera has been known for its healing properties for centuries. The gel from the leaves is highly effective against acne. Ideally, use fresh aloe juice – it has the highest concentration of active ingredients. As with any other method: apply the liquid directly to the pimple (preferably in the evening) and wash it off later (the next morning). Aloe has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, it moisturizes without clogging the pores.
5. Apple cider vinegar: The pH regulator
Apple cider vinegar is legendary for restoring the skin's natural pH balance. This alone offers a good chance of controlling acne. Mix apple cider vinegar with lukewarm water in a 1:3 ratio and gently apply it to the skin (for example, using a cotton pad). After 10 minutes, wash it off with a cleansing product. The acid in the vinegar effectively combats bacteria and helps remove excess oil. But be careful: This treatment requires gradually working your way up to the right concentration of the solution. If the apple cider vinegar is too strong, it will irritate the skin.
6. Green Tea: The Antioxidant Miracle
Green tea is known to be rich in antioxidants. Therefore, it can be drunk – of course – but also applied externally. This tasty remedy is also easy to prepare: simply brew a tea bag and then let it cool. Or, drip the fresh (then cooled) tea onto a cloth. Both work as a compress – which should be left on for 10 to 15 minutes. The polyphenols in green tea are anti-inflammatory; the antioxidants combat free radicals and promote skin renewal. Furthermore, the tea helps regulate sebum production. For a holistic approach, the tea should, of course, also be drunk.
7. Clay: The natural absorber
Are you familiar with clay? Of course… perhaps you know it better as healing clay. Green and white clay, in particular, are effective remedies for acne. Simply mix commercially available clay powder with water to form a creamy paste. As always: Apply gently (to your entire face) and rinse off after 15 to 20 minutes. Clay absorbs excess oil, thus helping to dry out acne. The minerals it contains also promote overall skin health.
8. Baking soda: The gentle exfoliating effect
And finally, a secret remedy from Grandma's kitchen: baking soda. It's been used for centuries to regulate the skin's pH balance. Mix baking soda with a little water to form a paste – and apply it to your face. That's it. After 3 to 4 minutes, wash the paste off your face with gentle massaging motions. The baking soda has noticeable exfoliating properties and removes dead skin cells.
