The biomembrane

When it comes to innovations in the skincare industry, consumers are bombarded with new marketing buzzwords almost daily. Sometimes the miracle cures are exotic plant extracts, sometimes newly invented anti-aging formulas. But: genuine substance is rare. That's why 48grams' biomembrane technology is considered revolutionary, even by experts. It's one of the most exciting developments in modern skincare.

A blessing for the tissue

The man behind this is Bernd Kuhs, a chemical engineer with a passion for biological processes. Back in the mid-1980s, he asked himself the following question: Are skin products packed with emulsifiers and preservatives really a blessing for the tissue? Driven by his characteristic skepticism, he began to research. It quickly became clear that the majority of these products disrupt the delicate balance of the skin barrier, often causing outright damage. This was the starting point for years of research.

Lipids as a defense

He utilized the knowledge that human skin protects itself with a lamellar structure, known in technical terms as the dermal membrane structure (DMS). These layers of lipids (i.e., fats) act like a defensive wall between skin cells: on the one hand, they retain moisture, and on the other hand, they ward off harmful substances from the outside. If this barrier is damaged—and this can happen quickly—problems arise, ranging from dry skin to chronic diseases. This is precisely where the biomembrane developed by Kuhs comes in. It is an exact replica of this protective layer. As a result, it helps the tissue to better utilize its own capabilities.

Manufactured at 1000 bar

Kuhs achieved a breakthrough as early as 1993: Using a process called high-pressure homogenization at up to 1,000 bar (pressure otherwise only found at great depths underwater), he created lamellar structures that, under an electron microscope, were astonishingly similar to the human original. The result: a cream base that combines water and oil without the use of emulsifiers. The technical effort is extremely high, but the result enables preparations that don't "stick" to the skin's surface, but rather integrate into the skin barrier. This significantly enhances the effectiveness of the active ingredients.

Optimally tolerated

This is a major advantage for customers with sensitive skin. Because the industry-typical emulsifiers – as well as fragrances and many preservatives – can be omitted, Bernd Kuhs' formulations are exceptionally well-tolerated. People with atopic dermatitis or acne report that their skin is less irritated.

The biomembrane is highly efficient

What's fascinating is that the biomembrane is not only gentle but also highly efficient. Studies show that ingredients embedded in this structure can be up to ten times more effective than in normal emulsions. For 48grams creations, this means: fewer ingredients, but noticeably more effect.

Not a superlative, but real impact

In an industry that usually revels in superlatives, the biomembrane is refreshingly down-to-earth. It's not a marketing promise, but the result of almost four decades of research. For Bernd Kuhs, the formula is simple: "Nature's technology is what matters most to me." And that's exactly what you can feel in every 48grams product.
