From the popular series: A look inside the editorial office! We recently got some friends together at the office and – naturally – chatted about skincare. We were surprised by a realization: Some of our girls actually didn't know that... Sunscreen really EVERY day It's important. And not just during summer holidays or at the beach. "Really, even in winter? And even when it's cloudy?" These two questions came up more often than we would have liked. But this realization has now also triggered this blog post: There are still many uncertainties. So today we're talking about why daily sun protection is so crucial. And what exactly is the difference between SPF 30, SPF 50, and SPF 50+?
What we all need to pay attention to
The sun is truly with us every day, even when it hides behind dark clouds. Its rays still reach the ground. UV-A rays, in particular, are ubiquitous. And it's precisely these that cause our skin to age faster, deepen wrinkles, and promote age spots. Unpleasant, sure... but UV-B rays are even worse: they are the primary cause of sunburn and a major factor in the increased risk of skin cancer.
Those who use cream notice the difference.
We in the blog team took a close look at our habits. Some of us ladies (no, we're not calling us girls anymore) have been applying sunscreen every morning for many years. Others only started later. The conversation made one thing clear: those who apply sunscreen regularly notice the difference very quickly. The skin suffers less throughout the day and therefore doesn't look as tired in the evening. In short: skin feels healthier in the long run. Let's call it what it is: sun protection It is therefore not just a protective shield, but a highly effective anti-aging treatment!
As natural as brushing your teeth
Nevertheless, we still frequently hear statements like, "But I don't want to always be slathered in so much sunscreen, as if I were lying on the beach"—even though they are long outdated. Because: Modern Sunscreen products are rather light (even the organic versions – like ours) Sun Protection Face Cream (– are included) and barely noticeable. They can easily be incorporated into your morning skincare routine. Honestly, if you pay a little attention, applying sunscreen will soon become a normal part of your routine. It will become as natural as brushing your teeth.
300 or 500 minutes – or less
"Is any SPF enough?" Yes, this question also came up in the women's group. It was representative of: What do SPF 30, 50, or 50+ actually mean? A closer look is worthwhile: SPF stands for "Sun Protection Factor." This value indicates how much longer the skin remains protected from sunlight compared to unprotected skin. An example helps: Someone who turns red after ten minutes without sunscreen could theoretically stay in the sun 30 times longer with SPF 30. With SPF 50, it would be 500 minutes – also theoretically. In practice, many factors play an important role: sweat, friction from clothing, or applying too little sunscreen. All of these can significantly reduce protection.
That little bit more…
The decisive factor is the filter performance: SPF 30 blocks around 97 percent of UVB rays, SPF 50 already 98 percent. And SPF 50+ blocks a little bit more. Yes, the difference in the specific numbers seems small. But especially for people with fair skin, this "little bit more" is crucial. The same applies to children and anyone prone to developing age spots. For everyday use, SPF 30 is often sufficient – for example, for the commute to the office or a (short) walk during your lunch break. However, those who spend a lot of time outdoors or have very sensitive skin are much better off with SPF 50 or 50+.
Sun protection is an investment in life
Ultimately, it's not about numbers. It's about awareness. sun protection It's not a holiday product that reminds us of the sea and palm trees. It's an investment in healthy skin – today and for many years to come. And the sooner we use it regularly, the more we'll benefit.
